Tu and vous both translate to you in English, but they’re used very differently in French. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand Tu vs. Vous in French, and when and how to use each one.

When to Use 'Tu'

We use tu in informal situations. It is casual, friendly, and perfect for addressing someone you know well, like a friend or family member. You'll use tu when speaking to children.

When to Use 'Vous'

Talking to an adult you do not know? Use vous.
